Here are three crazy custom paint colors. Instead of giving them cool names, the Germans named them Orange, Green, and Yellow.

I believe that last one is called “Atacama Yellow” and it’s gorgeous.

In fairness, the Orange is on a 880hp hybrid hypercar with exhausts on the roof

I actually much prefer that to the people who build extremely boring cars in extremely boring shades of black silver beige and white, and then give them names like sapphire black metallic and Sunburst Savannah pearl.

Let’s come up with our own German names for them. I’ll start.

The car had two window stickers in it. One was obviously put in the wrong M3 b/c is said “Frozen Silver.” The other described the color as simply “Yellow.” It could be Atacama Yellow, but if they had enough characters to type out Frozen Silver, why’d they omit Atacama?

I know exactly how you feel. When my dad bought his S8, they told him it came in any color he wanted...from the German rainbow:

Here is my counterpoint. E24s came in a wide variety of funky colors and they all have great names. Safari beige, saturn blue, tourmaline green...

Dunno but BMW has only had 4 shades of yellow in the past 10-15 years (Phoenix, Dakar, Atacama, and Austin). That one is def not Phoenix or Austin, and does not look “light” enough to be dakar but that could be the lighting. Atacama for reference:

“Instead of giving them cool names, the Germans named them Orange, Green, and Yellow.”

I think this is splendid. More should do likewise.

Who wants to know that their car’s paint is called Sunburst Kumquat or Lustrous Vermilion?

Yep. My Audi is painted in Melange Metallic, which is what they call beige.

That’s more like it! But how’d they come up with Saturn Blue? An orange planet is as far from blue as possible on the color wheel!

I think it’s only a couple grand as well. Which is crazy, since it’s pretty much the same price as getting Nitrous Blue, a mass-market color, on a Focus RS.

Here (Mexico) it costs 20k pesos to do that...

Which in a 2.5 million peso car is nothing, though I’m not sure how much Audi charges, I do know that Porsche charges around 35k... But PTS is like the cheapest option in Porsche.

I was thinking more like an Audi S3, where 20k does make a difference.

Kinja'd!!! Alex Zapata > Vicente Esteve
10/13/2016 at 16:44

Kinja'd!!!0

It makes more of a difference, but an S3 is still like a 700k car and color can make a big difference, specially when stock you can only get it in grey.

A lot of people go the Wrap route as well, it’s not a horrible idea.

The one above looks more like Speed Yellow (Individual). Was Atacama really a standard color choice?

That may be “Orange” at the top, but that’s Signal Green and I believe Speed Yellow at the bottom.

No, the green one is called “Grün” (German for green), the same color offered on the 997.1 GT3 RS. And the 918 is painted the same orange as that same generation RS.

Kinja'd!!!

Some people call them RS Green and RS Orange, but they just show up as green/orange on the PTS order form.

Signal Green is much much more saturated and has more yellow in it:

No, I’m pretty sure Atacama yellow required the “individual option” to the best of my recollection, but Atacama is a “BMW” color. Speed yellow is a Porsche color as far as I can remember.

Kinja'd!!!0

Atacama is awesome, and I don’t really like yellow cars. Speed Yellow is a Porsche color, but there’s been a number of BMWs painted that color through the Individual program. Was Dakar yellow a catalog option on the E36 M3?

Kinja'd!!! Tripper > davesaddiction @ opposite-lock.com
10/13/2016 at 17:40

Kinja'd!!!0

Audi has two tiers (or at least they did when inquired about the S3) 6k for a non-catalog “Audi” color (I asked about Nardo grey). 10k for whatever other color pending their approval. I wonder if BMW is the same.

I’m 90% sure that Dakar was a factory option on the E36 as I have seen a ton of them that color, but I couldn’t find out for sure with some quick googling.

I saw an “Evergreen” M coupe earlier this week. Only bimmer I have ever seen that color.

A 1 of 1 color in a certain car would be cool, but I’m not exactly sold on that particular color...

If I was going to spend the money and get something crazy on a BMW, I think I’d go Technoviolet or Atlantis Blue.

Have you heard if the Individual option is coming for the M2 soon? I know it wasn’t at the beginning. I don’t know if I’d ever pay the money for a custom color or interior from the factory, but it sure is cool to see what people (with far more money than me) come up with.

Kinja'd!!! Tripper > davesaddiction @ opposite-lock.com

Yea Atlantis is definitely one of my favorites. Apparently there are 41 Evergreen M coupes, must have been an extremely limited factory offering.

Kinja'd!!! Tripper > davesaddiction @ opposite-lock.com

Kinja'd!!!0

That is a great question. I lost interest/ability on the M2 a little after I saw how few were available and how much they were going for. I had a $500 deposit one way before the were released. Then the dealer called and said I’d need to put down another thou. At that point I thought that is an awful lot of money to lock up for what would probably only be a test drive.

I think I could only do a individual color if I was planning on keeping that particular car forever, and only if I made more money than I do now haha.

Pretty lame of your dealer to do that, but you probably could have made some money on a quick flip! Hindsight... I would assume they’ll be making a lot more going forward, so they won’t be “rare” for long. I do like the LBB color on it... Estroril’s pretty great on the M235i, too. And Porsche’s Sapphire Blue...

It would be fun to do Individual and Euro Delivery one time. Hope they keep making cars I want to own! If they don’t, Porsche will for many years to come - ha!

In general there really arent many in the Country, I know One (@WrappingGT in Instagram) they are pretty Good, don’t think they’ll be cheap, they do most of the wrapping work for dealer special cars near where I live, like custom special Jeeps and the sort.

Yea I thought the same thing (about it being lame). I’m sure I could have made a fuss and kept my slot, but that’s not my bag.

I would love to do Euro delivery. The salesman who sold me the S3 emailed me a few weeks ago asking if I was interested in RS3, so I locked down a TD in one when my dealer gets their first.

I had my heart set on a cheaper car and a sweet new bike for the next go around, but after my friend’s death 3 weeks ago I’m not sure how I feel about the motorcycle anymore. I haven’t been back on mine and while that’s a silly reason to stop riding, I think it may have sucked all of the fun out of it for me.

Sooo, I’m scouting the RS3 and the 718 Cayman. If/when I do that I’m going to do Euro delivery. Germany has been on our travel list for too long anyway.

A bike would be fun, but regardless of how good of a rider you are, it doesn’t stop someone not paying close enough attention from pulling out right in front of you, sadly...
